The right trucking company is important to choose when looking to continue your career. The process provides its own challenges and can be a learning curve in its own right.

What is the Best Trucking Company?

There is no universal answer to this. As with any career, you might not find that your current position is what you are looking for. Start doing research beforehand to save you any hassles in the long run. A company with a well-documented work history will provide plenty of answers for you.

Navigating the web can present a large number of negative reviews, but that goes for any position. You will have to set your own path when navigating the internet jungle.

This process can turn many people away, but don’t worry, there are plenty of fantastic companies to work for. Taking the time to seek out specific companies will give you the necessary insights into why you may or may not like a position. The time you put into researching companies is well worth it!

Is a Mega Trucking Company Good For You?

Large-scale trucking companies can be a great way to start, but for many, this might not be the case. Often, when you are an employee of large scale businesses, the mindset can be number focused. This can still be a great way to get your foot in the door, though. Large companies can provide paid CDL training to the right individual. Unfortunately, with new hires, they can often have lower wages for new recruits. Still, if you are looking to seriously become involved within the industry and you have limited means, this could be a good route for you.

Medium Sized Trucking Company

Medium-sized companies can give you a great experience when you become an employee. They are the ones who take the time to know and understand the specific qualifications a trucker may have.

With a medium-sized company, you have a more open and accessible line of communication between yourself and the owner. Remember, this is the person paying you and they have had experience doing this before. They are a good judge of an employee and can easily recognize an asset.

This size can generally come with a higher, and stable salary for drivers. They know that if they put in the time, the time is put back into them.

A company of this size can generally have more structured benefits. Where smaller companies can often lack the necessary manpower to replace drivers, a medium-sized company can provide you with a little more wiggle room in order to accommodate your value.

Good-quality companies can often be found in this range. They often put the time and maintenance into their trucks in order to maintain consistent reliability. A good trucking company will understand your value.

Analyze The Company

Trucking is a business. This means they require a return of investment. Different companies follow different methods. If you are not careful, then you may find yourself in a position that you do not like.

Some trucking companies have bad practices by either taking advantage of their employees by overworking them or even cheating them out of required payment. Be careful on your hunt.

Recruiters Know Very Little

Unfortunately, if a large-scale company is where you first look, then you will be introduced to a recruiting agent. These agents do not have the trucking experience or have limited knowledge of the industry. Their job is to simply look through your qualifications, say yes-or-no, and fill that empty employment space. There is very little thought put into their side of the hiring process. Even if you get the job with the company, you may find that they treat you as such – an employee to fill space.

If you feel that the person interviewing you does not have the appropriate knowledge, then it’s a good instinct that you may need to speak with someone higher on the totem pole. If they cannot adequately give that to you, then your best bet is to move on. There is value to you and you should be respected that way.

Look for These When Speaking to a Representative

Payroll – Identify that the rate and consistency of pay meet with what you were told.

Drivers – The most effective way to learn about the inner workings of a company is to ask their drivers. If they have long term and dedicated staff, then you can guarantee that the company takes care of their employees. A valuable driver will not hang around a bad employer. They can let you know if there have been any issues with payment and if the company puts the time into maintaining their vehicles.

Does the Company Have Routes in You Favorite Areas?

What cities do you like to visit? When traveling across the country, do you like taking i-70 or i-40? What cities do you like to avoid during your trip? These are all factors that you should take into consideration when choosing the right company. Sure, the pay to a city you don’t like could get you to say “yes” to the job, but you will soon learn the cost of what you are willing to put up with.

A Driver-Focused Company

In a wide range of employment, some companies put emphasis on the value of their drivers more than others. A company that is dedicated to treating its employees with respect is a company that keeps them. If a company of that caliber has an employee start with them, there is a greater chance that employees will want to stay, grow and learn alongside the business.
